Creating an IoT Fleet Management Solution using Splunk

A week ago, I had the privilege of attending the annual Splunk Partner Technical Symposium in New Orleans along with a colleague. At this event, we entered and won the 1st annual IoT Hackathon, sponsored by AWS. The Hackathon tasked us with developing an IoT fleet management solution using Ford GoBike IoT (Internet of Things) data. This post outlines the developed solution and the various data sources and tools we used. Overall, it was a great and fun exercise and helps illustrate how feature rich solutions can be developed in a very short amount of time using Splunk Enterprise. Read more

Discovered Intelligence Wins IoT Hackathon

IoT HackathonPaul and Dhiren from the Discovered Intelligence team won the first annual IoT Hackathon at the Splunk Partner Technical Symposium in New Orleans last week.

The IoT hackathon called for the creation of a fleet management system, using open data sources from the Ford GoBike Bay area bike share program. Using this data set and other sources, the team were able to develop a comprehensive solution using Splunk; incorporating data science techniques, visualizations, and advanced searches. Full details of the winning solution will be posted on Friday, so stay tuned!

Congratulations to Paul and Dhiren – another win for our skilled Discovered Intelligence team!

Real World IoT Use Cases

In the following article, we take a look at some real-world use cases to see just a few of the ways that IoT is being leveraged today. Read more

The Challenges Faced by the Internet of Things (IoT) in Canada

There are a number of challenges which must be overcome for the expansion of the Internet of Things (IoT). In some areas there has been significant progress in the past decade, such as RFID technology, data storage capabilities, and the growth of both wired and wireless network infrastructures. While in other areas there remains a large amount of work to be done: privacy, information security, communication standardization and even educating end-users.

The majority of the challenges companies and countries face in the IoT space are universal and not just specific to Canada. Therefore, the problems can be tackled jointly for mutual benefit; a possible breeding ground for innovation. Canadian companies are in the mix of all this and there are some challenges in Canada that other nations may not have to consider for their IoT strategies. Read more
